LuxorLuxor, on the site of ancient Thebes, is often called the world's greatest open air museum, where more than 5,000 years of history are laid out in all their glory. Highlights include the magnificent Karnak Temple complex, with its monuments to Ramses II and the god Amun-Ra. Across the River Nile, visit the temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the Colossi of Memnon, and, of course, the Valley of the Kings where tombs were constructed for the pharaohs and nobles of the New Kingdom. Abu SimbelThe UNESCO world heritage site at Abu Simbel consists of two massive rock temples carved from the rock face of a mountain 3,300 years ago, as a monument to Rameses II and his queen, Nefertari. In 1968, when the Aswan dam was being built, these mighty monuments were saved for future generations by being disassembled and rebuilt above the new shore line.
